What are BIOS Updates?

BIOS updates are an important aspect of ensuring that all machines in circulation are safe and secure, BIOS updates, alongside Windows security patches are a key first line of defence. They are also used to provide performance updates and tweaks to the hardware of your device, resulting in a more streamlined and speedy system.

What are we doing?

ICT Services will soon be performing BIOS updates to corporate devices, there are several factors that will determine how, when and if these updates will apply to your device.

Some of these factors include what make and model of PC/Laptop you have, what version of BIOS currently exists and what work has recently been carried out by ICT services on your device.

You will not need to do anything; your device will automatically be scanned, and the appropriate action will be carried out. Not all devices will require an update, and not all updates will be noticeable, some will simply happen in the background.

How will it happen?

Any applicable BIOS update will be automatically applied to your device in the background.

After a BIOS update has applied, you may see a screen like this the next time you turn on your device.

This part of the process is automatic and should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete.

IMPORTANT: Whilst unlikely, powering off your device during this process could cause irreparable damage and could result in the device having to be replaced.

Following the upgrade, your device may reboot once more, you will then be able to use your system as normal.
