Premature Birth/Hospitalised Baby Leave and Pay

We are delighted to offer workplace support for parents with premature or sick babies. When a baby is born prematurely, or admitted to hospital immediately after birth, it can be a difficult time for parents. In order to support you, we may be able to offer additional paid leave after the birth of a child who requires an extended stay in hospital.

This scheme applies to all our employees with the exception of staff on the complement of locally managed schools, for whom the policy adopted by their respective schools will apply.

To qualify you must:

  • Have been continuously employed for at least 26 weeks ending with the 15th week before the baby is due or in the case of adoption, the end of the week in which the adopter is notified of being matched with a child - the qualifying week is the week beginning with the Sunday that the adopter received notification of having been matched with the child and ends on the following Saturday.
  • Have average weekly earnings in the 8 weeks at the end of the qualifying week equal to the lower earnings limit (LEL) i.e. LEL for a child being matched will be £118 a week.

If your baby is born before 37 weeks gestation you may be entitled to receive an extra week’s Premature Baby Leave and Premature Baby Pay for every week your baby remains in hospital until your babies original due date.

Premature Baby Leave - This leave entitlement will be added to the end of your maternity, adoption, shared parental, maternity support or paternity period after this leave entitlement has been exhausted.

Premature Baby Pay - You can choose to receive premature baby pay as follows:

  • During the period of Premature Baby Leave; or
  • As a lump sum payment at the beginning of your leave of absence

Your normal entitlement to maternity, adoption, shared parental, maternity support or paternity leave pay will continue to apply and will not be affected by this scheme.

If your baby is hospitalised immediately following full term birth (38 weeks +), you may be entitled to receive full term hospitalised baby leave and pay for a period of up to 4 weeks.

Hospitalised Baby Leave – This leave entitlement will be added to the end of your maternity, adoption, shared parental, maternity support or paternity period after this leave entitlement has been exhausted.

Hospitalised Baby Pay – You can choose to receive hospitalised baby pay as follows:

  • During the period of Premature Baby Leave; or
  • As a lump sum payment at the beginning of your leave of absence

Your normal entitlement to maternity, adoption, shared parental, maternity support or paternity leave pay will continue to apply and will not be affected by this scheme.
