Who is it aimed at?

All staff who assist people to move and transfer in a care environment.

What are the objectives?

Provide staff with the knowledge and practical skill required to safely undertake moving and handing activities involving people. 

Provide staff with the knowledge and practical skill required to safely undertake moving and handing activities using a range of manual handling equipment

Reduce the likelihood of accidents and injuries to staff and service uses by ensuring all staff attending the training have a better understanding of:

  • Causes of MH related accidents and injuries
  • The prevention of MH related injuries and other musculoskeletal problems
  • An understanding of relevant Legislation and CCC policies and procedures including the role of the All Wales Manual Handling Passport Scheme
  • An understanding of the risk assessment process in relation to inanimate load handling and client handling
  • The ability to use an ergonomic approach in the reduction of manual handling related injuries
  • An awareness of how good verbal and written communication skills can enhance safe handling
  • The ability to carry out safe client handling techniques
  • An ability to identify unsafe practices and handling techniques
  • The ability to evaluate and use handling aids safely
  • Reporting manual handling problems

How will it make a difference?

  • Support CCC to meet its duties under current statutory and regulatory requirements
  • Reduce the risk of accidents and musculoskeletal injuries caused by poor handling practices in the workplace
  • Reduce sickness absence associated with poor manual handling practices.
  • Positively contribute to the health, safety and dignity of service users.

How to apply:

If you work for Carmarthenshire County Council (CCC) and are logged into a CCC device – PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone, complete this application form.

If you work for the Council but do NOT have access to a CCC device or an email address your line manager will need to apply on your behalf.

Council employees cannot apply for any courses from their own personal device.


Partners, agency staff or people who do not work for the Council cannot apply for this course.
