ILM Level 5: Higher Apprenticeship in Management

Who is it aimed at?

The Higher Apprenticeship in Management is targeted at experienced managers and/or those managers who have previously undertaken some management development training. This qualification develops middle management skills and gives participants the essential knowledge & skills required at this level.  

On completion of the framework, the candidate will achieve the following qualifications:

  • ILM Level 5 Diploma in Principles of Leadership and Management
  • Level 5 NVQ Diploma in Management
  • Essential Skills Wales in Communication Level 2, Application of Number Level 2 & ICT Level 2

What are the objectives?

The ILM Level 5 Diploma provides you with the knowledge element of the programme and be made up of the following units:

  • Developing Critical Thinking
  • Understanding the Management Role to Improve Management Performance
  • Managing Improvement
  • Making a Financial Case
  • Leading Innovation & Change
  • Becoming an Effective Leader
  • Understanding the Skills, Principles & Practice of Effective Management Coaching & Mentoring
  • Partnership Working
  • Managing Efficiency & Effectiveness

The Level 5 NVQ Diploma provides the competence element of the programme which provides you with the opportunity to link the theory back to the workplace.

You will be required to provide evidence for a number of mandatory and optional units. The optional units will be agreed between you and your coach. The mandatory units are listed below:

  • Providing Leadership & Direction for Own Area of Responsibility
  • Develop & Evaluate Operational Plans for Own Area of Responsibility
  • Plan Change in Own Area of Responsibility
  • Work Productively with Colleagues & Stakeholders

How will it make a difference?

The Higher Apprenticeship in Management is designed to give you the knowledge and skills to carry out the various functions and responsibilities of the middle management role and the limits of their authority and accountability.


The recommended timeframe to complete the programme is 18 months. You can achieve in a shorter time if they wish.


This programme is funded by the Welsh Government so there will be no charge.

How to apply:

If you work for Carmarthenshire County Council (CCC) and are logged into a CCC device – PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone, complete this application form.

If you work for the Council but do NOT have access to a CCC device or an email address your line manager will need to apply on your behalf.

Council employees cannot apply for any courses from their own personal device.

Partners, agency staff or people who do not work for the Council cannot apply for this course.
