Introduction to Motivational Interviewing

Who is it aimed at?

All staff working in Children’s Services, including Fostering and Adoption, and Next Step teams.

What are the objectives?

  • Delegates will
  • Develop their empathic listening skills (OARS)
  • Better understand the perspective of the service user, and empower them to use their intrinsic strengths and motivation for change
  • Be better placed to empower service users to feel “Ready, willing and able” to make changes to their behaviours/lifestyle
  • Feel more confident and competent in using their communication skills
  • Practice the skills of MI in a safe environment, using tools to measure use

How will it make a difference?

Delegates will feel more confident in using their empathic listening skills to support the increased probability of better outcomes for service users. The skills are transferable across different areas of work.

How to apply:

If you work for Carmarthenshire County Council (CCC) and are logged into a CCC device – PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone, complete this application form.

If you work for the Council but do NOT have access to a CCC device or an email address your line manager will need to apply on your behalf.

Council employees cannot apply for any courses from their own personal device.

Partners, agency staff or people who do not work for the Council but meet the eligibility criteria to attend this course should complete this application form.
