Guidance for employees in the run up to the elections

The Police and Crime Commissioner Elections are scheduled to take place on Thursday, 2 May 2024.

The Election Notice will be published on Monday, March 25, 2024, and the period between this notice and the election is referred to as the pre-election period.

During this period the council needs to ensure that it remains impartial - extra care must be taken by all members and staff to ensure that the council maintains a neutral stance and does not give prominence or publicity to any particular candidate or party.

To support members and staff during this period, we have agreed a regional pre-election protocol.

Whilst this will come into effect on Monday, March 25, 2024, please take this early opportunity to familiarise yourself with the guidance and review any plans you have during the pre-election period.

The guidance protocol covers matters like publicity, engagements, announcements and briefings, and how these should be managed during the pre-election period.

It also advises around use of council resources, correspondence with candidates, meetings and use of council buildings, and specific guidance for members and employees standing for election.

Please note that the guidance applies to all council members, employees and contractors undertaking work on behalf of the council.
