As part of the ‘Keep Learning’ phase in our Five Steps to Wellbeing, we want to draw your attention to the Mental Health First Aid Training available to staff.

The purpose of this worthwhile programme is to train a network of our staff as fully qualified Adult Mental Health First Aiders. The training will equip attendees with the skills and knowledge to effectively provide initial help and support to a colleague in need. The course will cover a wide range of subjects including giving an insight on how to spot the signs, symptoms and risk factors of some key mental health conditions.

What are mental health first aiders?

MHFA is both preventative and proactive. The MHFA are a network of staff throughout the authority, they are trained to provide mental health first aid to a colleague in need – when experiencing mental health crisis or emotional distress and to spot the early signs of mental ill-health in others. They are equipped to provide initial support, a non-judgemental, empathetic ear and to confidently signpost someone to appropriate support, both internal and external, they are equipped to deal with emergencies too.

How to get in touch?

If you need are experiencing mental ill-health or need to speak to a qualified MHFA, you will find a list of Mental Health First Aiders on the intranet with their contact details, feel free to contact any MHFA. Be assured all conversations are confidential.
