Neurodiversity Celebration Week

Neurodiversity Celebration Week starts on 18th March 2024, and is an ideal opportunity to learn more about, and celebrate, neurodiversity.

When it comes to inclusion, neurodiversity refers to a world where neurological differences are recognised and respected as all other human variations.

Depending on how our brains are wired we think, move, process information and communicate in different ways. Many people in our community use neurodiversity as an umbrella term used to describe alternative thinking styles such as Dyslexia, DCD (Dyspraxia), Dyscalculia, Autism and ADHD. But regardless of labels, neurodiversity is about recognising those who think differently.

Approximately 15-20% of population has a neurological difference. Instead of labelling people with deficits or disorders, when we use the term neurodiversity, we take a balanced view of an individual’s unique strengths and challenges.

We all have things we’re naturally good at and things we’re not so good at. Neurodivergent employees often bring unique skills and talents to their work.

For example, depending on the individual, they might be particularly good at:

  • problem-solving
  • Logical thinking
  • creativity
  • innovation
  • consistency
  • thinking outside of the box
  • spotting patterns and trends
  • retaining information
  • data analysis
  • seeing things from a
  • different perspective
  • attention to detail

There are a number of ways that we can support neurodiverse individuals within our workforce, such as:-

  • Get to know the individual
  • Provide supportive technology and equipment
  • Communicate clearly
  • Assign work tasks appropriately
  • Consider the physical environment
  • Be understanding and empathetic
  • Raise awareness of neurodiversity in your organisation
  • Nurture good mental wellbeing
