World Health Day: A Reminder to Put Our Wellbeing First
Every year on 7 April, people around the globe come together to mark World Health Day, an initiative led by the World Health Organization to raise awareness about important health issues and encourage healthier living.
World Health Day is a valuable reminder that health is not just about avoiding illness- it is about maintaining physical, mental, and social wellbeing. In today’s fast-paced work environment, it can be easy to overlook the small habits that support our health. Taking time to move more, eat well, rest properly, and manage stress can make a significant difference to our overall wellbeing.
Workplaces also play an important role in supporting healthier lifestyles. Creating a culture that encourages balance, regular breaks, and open conversations about wellbeing helps employees feel supported and able to perform at their best. Small changes, such as stepping away from the desk for a short walk, staying hydrated throughout the day, or taking a moment to reset during a busy schedule, can all contribute to better health.
Mental health is just as important as physical health. Checking in with colleagues, maintaining strong connections, and knowing when to take time for yourself are all essential parts of maintaining wellbeing. A supportive work environment helps everyone feel valued, motivated, and able to thrive. We have a team of over 100 Mental Health First Aiders across the authority who can support you. They are equipped to provide initial support, a non-judgemental, empathetic ear and to confidently signpost someone to appropriate support, both internal and external, they are equipped to deal with emergencies too.
As we mark World Health Day, it is a great opportunity for all of us to reflect on our daily habits and consider small steps that can make a positive impact. By prioritising health and wellbeing, both individually and in the workplace, we can help create a happier, healthier future for everyone.
