Guidance for employees in the run up to the elections

The UK General Election will take place on Thursday, 4 July, 2024.

The pre-election period comes into effect on Friday, May 31, 2024 please take this opportunity to familiarise yourself with the guidance and review any plans you have during the UK General Election pre-election period.

During this period the Council needs to ensure that it remains impartial - extra care must be taken by all members and staff to ensure that the Council maintains a neutral stance and does not give prominence or publicity to any particular candidate or party.

To support members and staff during this period, we have agreed a specific UK General Election pre-election protocol.

The protocol covers matters like publicity, engagements, announcements and briefings, and how these should be managed during the pre-election period.

It also advises around use of Council resources, correspondence with candidates, meetings and use of Council buildings.

Please note that the guidance applies to all Council members, employees and contractors undertaking work on behalf of the Council.
