Think Before You Drink Challenge
Going completely sober for a month can feel like too much for many people — and for some, it can even lead to drinking more once the month ends.
If you’ve noticed your drinking has slowly increased — fewer alcohol-free days or a couple of extra drinks each time — this challenge is a great opportunity to pause, take stock, and regain control.
The Aim
To reduce both how often you drink and how much you drink over a 4-week period — and hopefully beyond.
The Challenge
Drink on no more than 6 occasions during January
When you do drink, have no more than 4 units
How It Works
- Download the Try Dry app by Alcohol Change UK
-
Allow notifications (optional, but helpful reminders to log your days)
-
Complete your current drinking profile
-
Each day, log whether you drank — and what you drank — using the “My Progress” tab
-
At the end of the challenge, send in:
-
- A photo of your calendar showing your progress
- How much money you’ve saved (optional!)
Tips for Success
- Plan ahead – Decide which social events you’ll drink at and consider being the designated driver for others
- Choose alternatives – The first drink or two can be the hardest, so have alcohol-free options ready
- Mix it up – Alternate alcoholic drinks with water or soft drinks
- Do it together – Ask a colleague, friend, or family member to join you
- Drink smarter – Stick to lower-unit options like single gin and tonics
