New Bereaved Partner's Paternity Leave entitlement

The Council is committed to supporting employees through significant life events and ensuring that staff have access to the help and flexibility they need when facing difficult circumstances.

From 6 April 2026, a new Bereaved Partner's Paternity Leave entitlement was introduced to support employees who become the primary carer of a child following the death of the child's mother or adopter during the child's first year of life or adoption placement.

Eligible employees may be entitled to take up to 52 weeks' leave, helping them balance caring responsibilities during an exceptionally difficult period. The entitlement applies in both birth and adoption circumstances, subject to eligibility criteria.

This new entitlement reflects the Council's commitment to employee wellbeing and recognises the importance of providing time and support to those adjusting to changed family circumstances while caring for a child.

Employees who believe they may be eligible, or who would like to find out more, should speak to their manager or contact HR. Full details, including eligibility criteria and how to apply, are available on the intranet
