Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) and the Mental Health Act
Who is it aimed at?
AMHPs employed by Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire.
What are the objectives?
Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) refers to any type of brain damage that occurs after birth. The impact on executive functioning and decision making, along with potential co-occurring mental health issues, will need to be considered by the AMHP during assessment. The course will offer the following:
- Knowledge about the most common brain injuries and presentation in the context of MHA assessments
- Knowledge about alcohol related brain damage and possible implications for practice
- Exploration of the communication needs and impacts on executive functioning and decision making for individuals affected by ABI
- Examination of how the Mental Health Act Code of Practice informs Mental Health Act assessments with this group of individuals
- Exploration of risk assessment and risk management issues
- Consideration of social exclusion issues and anti-discriminatory practice
How will it make a difference?
The training will support participants’ practice when undertaking Mental Health Act assessments on individuals with acquired brain injuries.
