Mental Capacity Act - Best Interests

Who is it aimed at?

The course is aimed at Social Workers, Social Work Assistants and Social Care professionals in related settings e.g. registered care homes etc.

What are the objectives?

This one-day session is designed to move beyond basic awareness of the legislation and support participants to apply their knowledge to practice and develop the skills necessary to, think about, and identify best interests, in accordance with the best interest checklist (s.4) of the Mental Capacity Act 2005.

How will it make a difference?

This course will provide participants with the following learning outcomes:

  • Understand how the principles of the MCA apply to best interest decisions.
  • Increased awareness of best practice guidance (from both the code and case law) that should underpin the best interest process.
  • Understand the elements of the best interest checklist and the information relevant to inform decision making.
  • Develop skills and strategies to engage with individuals and their supporters as part of the best interest process.

How to apply:

If you work for Carmarthenshire County Council (CCC) and are logged into a CCC device – PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone, complete this application form.

If you work for the Council but do NOT have access to a CCC device or an email address your line manager will need to apply on your behalf.

Council employees cannot apply for any courses from their own personal device.


Partners, agency staff or people who do not work for the Council but meet the eligibility criteria to attend this course should complete this application form.
