Mental Capacity Act - Best Interests
Who is it aimed at?
Team Managers, Social Workers and Social Work Assistants. Registered Care Home Managers from both the local authority and the independent sector. It is essential that all applicants have attended prior relevant training in relation to the Mental Capacity Act.
What are the objectives?
To refresh staff knowledge about the legal framework relating to best interests under the Mental Capacity Act.
To inform staff about Departmental Guidance on Determining Best Interests.
This would include:
- who can be a decision maker
- factors to be taken into account when determining best interests
- reaching decisions on complex issues
- best interests conferences
- advocacy
How will it make a difference?
Attending this training will allow staff to develop a greater understanding of the process of assessing best interests under the Mental Capacity Act.

How to apply:
If you work for Carmarthenshire County Council (CCC) and are logged into a CCC device – PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone, complete this application form.
If you work for the Council but do NOT have access to a CCC device or an email address your line manager will need to apply on your behalf.
Council employees cannot apply for any courses from their own personal device.
Partners, agency staff or people who do not work for the Council but meet the eligibility criteria to attend this course should complete this application form.
