Who is it aimed at?

Approved Mental Health Practitioners in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokshire

What are the objectives?

  • Explore and understand the most common organic brain disorders, their presentation and impact on cognitive, executive, and social function
  • Understand and raise awareness of alcohol related brain damage (ARBD) and the possible impacts on practice and decision making with this group
  • Identify and explore communication needs and impacts on executive functioning and decision making for individuals effected by Organic Neurocognitive Disorders
  • An understanding of how the Code of Practice and case law informs Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity assessment for this service user group
  • An awareness of risk assessment and management issues with individuals with co-existing mental health conditions
  • To explore common behaviours, presentations and social exclusion issues associated with neurocognitive disorders
  • To increase awareness of how equality and diversity and Human Rights issues might apply and explore anti-discriminatory practice issues.

How will it make a difference?

A wide range of factors can impact upon a persons’ cognitive and social functioning and well-being and this one-day session focuses on the impact of organic brain disorders, more recently also referred to as neuro-cognitive disorders, on a person’s mental health and what should be considered in the application of section 13 ‘whole circumstances’ in the AMHP assessment process.This one-day AMHP refresher session is designed to provide an update on participant knowledge by considering the current position of available evidence and case law judgements, and provide an opportunity to reflect with peers on key themes and pressures when assessing multiple complex needs and risks.

If you work for Carmarthenshire County Council (CCC) and are logged into a CCC device – PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone, complete this application form.

If you work for the Council but do NOT have access to a CCC device or an email address your line manager will need to apply on your behalf.

Council employees cannot apply for any courses from their own personal device.


Partners, agency staff or people who do not work for the Council cannot apply for this course.
