Open University Social Work Degree Programme
Who is it aimed at?
Carmarthenshire County Council’s Department for Communities and Education & Children Services Department provide opportunities for relevant staff to apply for part-sponsorship to the Open University’s Social Work Degree Programme.
What are the objectives?
- Year One of the programme – ‘Introducing Health & Social Care’; and ‘Foundations for Social Work Practice’. These modules will provide an insight into the organisation of social care in the UK and develop awareness of the different components of good social work practice.
- Year Two of the programme – ‘Social Work Law’; and ‘Applied Social Work Practice’ (including a 90 day placement). These modules will examine the legal framework that shapes and regulates social care decision-making, explore the Social Care Wales National Occupational Standards for Social Care Workers along with the values/skills in the social work process.
- Year Three of the programme requires completion of two modules – ‘Critical Social Work Practice’ (including a 90 day placement) and one of the following optional modules which relates to the service area of member of staff: ‘Young Lives, Parenting and Families’; ‘Approaches to Mental Health’; ‘Investigating Health & Social Care’; ‘Leading, Managing, Caring’
The emphasis is on supporting independent learning with guidance towards sources of information to examine and evaluate. Successful completion of these modules will enable staff to qualify as a Social Work Practitioner and register with Social Care Wales in order to practise.
How will it make a difference?
