Shwmae Su’mae Day 2025

Don’t forget to say ‘Shwmae’ on Wednesday, (October 15) as part of Shwmae Su’mae day.

The annual national campaign encourages everyone to use their Welsh, by starting every conversation with 'Shwmae'.

The aim of the day is to show that the Welsh language belongs to everyone—be it fluent speakers, learners or if you are shy about your Welsh, so go for it!

Don’t forget we have a number of opportunities available to help you learn, practice and improve your Welsh language skills. Whether you are a complete beginner, want to gain more confidence or improve your written skills there's a course available for you. You can find out more about all the courses and support on our Learning and Development page on the intranet.

Why listening helps you learn faster

If you’re looking to grow your confidence in Welsh, one of the easiest and most powerful steps you can take is simply listening:

·       Brains tune in fast – Research shows that the brain recognises sound patterns in a new language after just a few hours of listening, even before you can speak the words.

·       Better pronunciation – Listening regularly helps you pick up the natural rhythm, intonation, and subtle sounds of Welsh that are tricky to learn from reading alone.

·       Boosts understanding – The more you hear Welsh in everyday contexts (radio, podcasts, TV), the easier it becomes for your brain to connect meanings to sounds, making speaking and reading much more natural.

Learning made easy

Don’t forget, Thinqi has a range of Welsh language modules available for staff. These short, practical lessons are perfect if you’d like to build confidence in greetings, everyday conversations, and workplace Welsh at your own pace. Why not log in today and try a quick module?

Top tip: Watch with Welsh

Did you know? Many programmes on BBC iPlayer are available with a bilingual option. Switching to Welsh audio or subtitles is a simple way to boost your listening skills while enjoying your favourite shows.

To celebrate, this year we have launched a new Autumn/Winter Teams background of the Tywi Valley Path in Dryslwyn which will also visibly show if you are a Welsh speaker or learner. To find the new background please head to the Marketing & Media page on the intranet.

To celebrate this year we’re holding a special Clwb Clebran with Fin Gough and Sioned Cray – the youngest pair to date to have taken part in the BBC’s Race Across the World programme.

This will be a great chance to meet them and hear about their experiences, what they learnt along the way and what’s next for the pair!

Come along to Clwb Clebran on Tuesday, 21 October at 12.30pm -1.30pm on Teams.
