Suicide prevention day

As we approach Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, 2025, it is crucial for all of us at Carmarthenshire County Council to come together and raise awareness about this important issue. Suicide is a global public health concern that affects individuals, families, and communities. By promoting awareness and understanding, we can help prevent suicide and support those who may be struggling.

Understanding the Importance of Suicide Prevention

Suicide Prevention Day is an opportunity to educate ourselves and others about the signs of suicidal behavior and the resources available for those in need. It is a day to remember those we have lost to suicide and to reaffirm our commitment to supporting mental health and well-being within our community.

How You Can Help

Take Time to Learn: Equip yourself with the knowledge to recognise the warning signs of suicide in the people around you—whether they are colleagues, friends, or loved ones. Understanding these indicators can help you reach out and offer support when it matters most.

Share What You Know: Don’t underestimate the impact of a conversation. Pass on what you learn about suicide prevention to those in your personal and professional life, helping to create a more informed and caring community.

Be a Source of Encouragement: Actively encourage those close to you to make use of the mental health support available. If someone confides in you, listen with empathy and without judgment, and guide them towards professional help if needed.

Foster Openness: Make a conscious effort to create a safe space for mental health discussions, both at home and at work. Your willingness to talk openly may inspire others to do the same.

Get Involved: Take part in Suicide Prevention Day activities—whether that means attending a local workshop, participating in a walk, or simply checking in on someone you know may be struggling. Even small gestures can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.
