Eating Disorder Awareness Week
Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2026 runs from 23 February to 1 March, focusing on the theme of ‘Community’ to support those affected by eating disorders.
Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, background, body size, or job role. They are complex illnesses influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors — and recovery is possible with the right support.
Why This Week Matters
Eating Disorder Awareness Week highlights the importance of early recognition, reducing stigma, and encouraging compassionate support. A supportive workplace can make a meaningful difference.
Understanding Eating Disorders
Eating disorders include conditions such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. They can affect physical health, mental wellbeing, energy levels, and concentration — including at work.
Recognising the Signs
Everyone’s experience is different, but possible signs may include:
- Changes in eating habits
- Preoccupation with food, weight, or body image
- Withdrawal from social situations involving food
- Increased anxiety, irritability, or low mood
We are not here to diagnose colleagues. Being informed helps us respond with empathy if someone chooses to open up.
How We Can Support Each Other at Work
Small actions help create a supportive culture:
- Use respectful language about food and bodies
- Avoid diet or weight‑focused conversations in shared spaces
- Focus on wellbeing, not appearance
- Listen without judgement
- Encourage professional support where appropriate
Support
- If you’re struggling or concerned about a colleague, you don’t have to manage it alone. Reaching out early can help prevent difficulties from escalating.
