Who is it aimed at?
Social Workers in the Substence Misuse Team, Adult and Integrated Services.
What are the objectives?
- Identify and use appropriate and up-to-date language and terminology in relation to ADHD / ADD
- Appreciate that learning and research in the field of ADHD / ADD is ongoing and that new theories, approaches and interventions continue to arise
- Consider taking a neurodiverse view of ADHD / ADD and other related / overlapping ‘spectrum’ conditions
- Have an overview of symptoms, presentation and profile of people with an ADHD / ADD diagnosis
- Understand that the frequency, prevalence ad intensity of these may change with age, life experience and support
- Be aware that ADHD / ADD may involve an array of ‘overlapping’ associated conditions or differences, and / or differential / co-occurring diagnoses - including autism, learning disability, anxiety and/or other functional mental illnesses, unusual, or ‘challenging’ behaviours, different sensitivity to sensory stimuli etc
- Consider good practice / non-aversive approaches to supporting behaviours of concern of individuals with ADHD / ADD
- Think about the importance of meeting needs of service users with ADHD / ADD rather than forcing conformity
- Source further material that may be helpful, including suggested authors / websites etc
