An Introduction to Social Work Practice Learning & Practice Assessment

Who is it aimed at?

This course is aimed at registered and qualified social workers with a minimum of two years qualified practice experience who are interested in becoming qualified ‘Practice Educators’. Social Workers who have qualified since April, 2016 must have successfully completed the Consolidation Programme before they apply. The course is a 30 credit postgraduate course at Masters Level 7. This course also requires the continuous assessment of a social work degree or masters degree student who will be based within the Candidate’s place of work for either 80, 90 or 100 days.

What are the objectives?

  • To understand and critically appreciate the policy background to developments in social work, relevant legislation, the National Occupational Standards for Social Work & the
  • Code of Professional Practice for Social Care Workers and the requirements of professional practice
  • To understand and recognise the importance of adult learning theory, teaching and learning styles
  • To understand and recognise the impact of difference and discrimination, thus promoting fairness and equity when assessing practice learning and competence
  • To understand and demonstrate as a Practice Educator the role of social work theories, methods and research in underpinning social work practice
  • To demonstrate the ability to prepare for and undertake student assessment and supervision.

How will it make a difference?

Will provide the knowledge and skills to enable them to become qualified Practice Educators, contributing to the social work student’s learning in a planned and effective way, thus allowing sound judgements about student competence. It will also provide social workers with evidence of continuous professional development to meet the Social Care Wales re-registration requirements.
