Mentoring Social Workers in their First Year in Practice

Who is it aimed at?

Qualified Social Workers with a minimum of 3 years post qualifying experience, Senior Social Work Practitioners, Professional Leads and Team Managers (Social Work Qualified) who wish to become Mentors for newly qualified social workers during their first year in practice.

What are the objectives?

  • The Role & Purpose of Mentoring – Participants will understand the Social Care Wales requirements for First Year in Practice, responsibilities, developing competence & confidence and the links to occupational standards and Social Care Codes of Professional Practice
  • The Principles of Mentoring – Participants will understand the process, values and relationships between supervising, coaching and mentoring. They will understand and manage boundaries, enabling motivation and empowerment of the mentee
  • The Practice of Mentoring – Participants will understand the skills involved in mentoring including interacting, listening, facilitating, encouraging networks, preparation, self-evaluation and goal setting.
  • The Mentoring Contract – Participants will understand the purpose of a mentoring contract and the information which should be included for mentor and mentee.

How will it make a difference?

Mentors will develop knowledge and understanding of the process of mentoring which will enable them to make the most effective use of the mentoring role to support the development of newly qualified social workers.

If you work for Carmarthenshire County Council (CCC) and are logged into a CCC device – PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone, complete this application form.

If you work for the Council but do NOT have access to a CCC device or an email address your line manager will need to apply on your behalf.

Council employees cannot apply for any courses from their own personal device.


Partners, agency staff or people who do not work for the Council cannot apply for this course.
