Critical Reflection in Practice

Who is it aimed at?

This is the First in a Series of Three Developmental Workshops for Newly Qualified Social Workers in their First Year of Practice. It is important to note that these workshops also prepare newly qualified social workers for work to be completed in the Consolidation Programme for second year of practice.

What are the objectives?

To Provide Participants With:

  • An understanding of the differences between reflection and critical reflection; this will be explored by considering the definitions and analysing the depth and importance of applying critical reflection in practice; different levels of reflection; also to consider how these can contribute to the use of professional judgement in assessments.
  • The opportunity to explore models of critical reflection; this will enable participants to develop knowledge of practice based knowledge; to be given the opportunity to develop knowledge of differing personal models of reflection that they can use in assessments and in practice.
  • An exploration between direct practice and critical reflection; this will include linking theory to practice in terms of being able to explore factors such as risk of harm and abuse to adults and children; professional accountability; reflecting as a qualified practitioner.
  • The opportunity to consider ways to develop skills in reflecting on practice on a deeper level; working with increasing autonomy in complex situations; embedding critical thinking and holistic approaches in practice; reflecting and evaluating own practice.

How will it make a difference?

Newly qualified social workers will improve their understanding and develop further skills in critical thinking. They will be able to use person-centred, outcome-focussed approaches to carry out a range of assessments whilst working collaboratively with service users, carers and other professionals.
