Introduction to Systemic Practice in Adult and Integrated Services (Managers and Assistant Team Managers)

Who is it aimed at?

Social work managers and assistant team managers in adult an integrated services

What are the objectives?

These three days are an opportunity to explore some key ideas from the field of systemic practice and understand their application within the adult social care context. Students will learn how systemic ideas make a difference to individuals, networks and practitioners. They will have the chance to apply these ideas to case examples and will leave the training with practical skills to take into their own practice.

Day 1 begins with an overview of the basic concepts of systemic theory. This will include an introduction to ideas such as cybernetics and homeostasis as a way of understanding the function of complex systems. We will consider how problems are held within systems and can be created and maintained within interactional patterns. John Burnham's social graces will be introduced in order to support the understanding of how difference and diversity can impact on and influence systems.

Day 2 will introduce students to the Milan systemic approach with a focus on hypothesising as a way of managing uncertainty and complexity in a decision making context. The theory and practice of circular questions will enable practitioners to understand how questions can be used as interventions in
order to bring about change.

The final day of the course demonstrates how the genogram can be used as a therapeutic tool to use with individuals and those who are important to them. The genogram will also be considered as a tool to promote systemic thinking in case discussion. All the learning from the previous two days is consolidated on the final day, which has a practical focus and allows students to implement the theory and techniques that they have acquired over the three days.

How will it make a difference?

Social Work managers and assistant team managers will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to apply systemic theories to practice and case discussion.
