Dyfed Powys Local Resilience Forum (DPLRF) Loggist Training

Page updated: 29/07/2024

The new loggist training programme commenced in October 2023, with a number of volunteers attending a Tactical Coordinating Group training session, this afforded an opportunity for staff to familiarise themselves with multi-agency partnership meeting processes and procedures. In January 2024, a bespoke Loggist training session was delivered by Local Authority and Police facilitators, this incorporated Civil Contingency Emergency familiarisation inputs and training on completing the recently updated and stripped back loggist forms. Carmarthenshire County Council provided 8 of the 12 candidates, all successfully passing the course.

For the past 6 months a series of Continuous Professional Development events, have enabling loggist’s to develop their skills in a safe and supportive learning environment. In June, Zoe Hughes and Kerry Latham were selected to attend the 2-day multi-agency Gold Command training, as the designated course loggist’s, which was hosted in Dyfed Powys Police HQ Strategic Command Centre. The sessions have been designed to train Directors and the most senior leaders across a broad spectrum of, ‘blue light’ and multi-agency partners. In this challenging environment, both Zoe and Kerry were commended for their outstanding loggist work, receiving accolades from the training staff and guest speakers. This is a tremendous achievement which has elevate status of Carmarthenshire County Council amongst its partner agencies, along with the loggist role.

See below comments from Zoe & Kerry on their own personal experience as a Loggist:

“We work as Management Support Officers in Place and Infrastructure and in our day-to-day roles we support the Heads of Service and the wider management team with diary, email and meeting organisation along with a wide range of administrative support including preparation/editing of papers and meeting minutes.

After being asked to undertake Loggist training we attended a TCG/Silver course where we had a taster of being a loggist during the exercises, this was our first experience of what a loggist does and was very different to the minute taking we were used to.

This was followed up by attending a loggist specific course that went into detail on the expectations and importance of a loggist and gave us chance to practice the skills we had learned. At this point we were both overwhelmed and hesitant to continue with the training as it was so different from anything we had done before.

Kerry followed this up by attending a sub-group meeting and another TCG/Silver course to gain more loggist experience, Zoe and Kerry have also both recently attended the 2-day Wales Gold training as loggist’s. Whilst we were both anxious and apprehensive going into gold training it was a turning point for us both and we came out of it ready and eager to do more.

Since starting the training, we have both seen a positive impact on our work and are using many of the skills of a loggist in our daily roles. We both have also had an increase in confidence particularly in how we interact with a variety of roles and organisations in a variety of situations. It has also changed the way we approach information heavy meetings and we both feel prepared and capable of supporting our department in the event of an incident.”
