Team wellbeing
As a manager, you play an important role in supporting your team’s mental and physical health and wellbeing.
- Team motivation
- Workload distribution
- Support with relationships in and out of the team
- A positive working environment
- A positive working culture
- Supporting the team through change
- Leading by example with your own self-care
It is important to understand how your team are and involve them in developing a plan to make positive changes where needed. A happier, healthier team means more productivity and efficiency.
Find below some practical ways to incorporate health and wellbeing into your business planning and team management.
It is important to understand if there are any wellbeing issues affecting your team.
You could:
- Speak to team, individually or in a team meeting, about their wellbeing to identify any issues
- Encourage your team to complete a health and wellbeing survey
- Link in with your Department or Service Wellbeing Action Plan
- Look at sickness absence, accident reporting and occ health referral data to identify the main area/s of concern. (see CaseViewer).
Together with your team you could create a Wellbeing Charter to create an understanding of the feel of the culture of the team, its vision and everyone’s roles within it.
If you have identified areas to be improved in line with your wellbeing charter, try to work with your teams to achieve these changes. These can be documented in a Wellbeing Action Plan.
At intervals agreed with your team, review the action plan to see how you are getting on.
Individual wellbeing
In addition to looking at your team as a whole, it is also important, where possible to check in every now and again with the individuals in your team to see how they are getting on. We have developed a Employee Wellbeing Talking Toolkit to support you to have a conversation with an employee around wellbeing, including helpful questions and prompts and next steps should any issues be identified.
