August Wellbeing Challenge: Sleep & Recovery Reset

Focus: Sleep & Recovery
Challenge: Better Sleep Blueprint

Quality sleep helps improve mood, concentration, resilience, recovery and overall wellbeing. It is especially important for employees working rotating shifts, early starts or physically demanding roles. Sleep and recovery form part of the Council's wider commitment to supporting employee health, wellbeing and fatigue management.

1. Track Your Sleep Keep a simple sleep diary for 7 days:

  • Bedtime and wake-up time

  • Hours slept

  • Energy levels during the day

2. Create a Wind-Down Routine Spend 30 minutes before bed:

  • Switching off screens

  • Reading, stretching or relaxing

  • Avoiding work-related tasks

3. Caffeine Challenge Try to avoid caffeine after 2pm to support better quality sleep.

4. Prioritise Recovery Choose one recovery activity each day:

  • Walking

  • Stretching

  • Mindfulness

  • Relaxation exercises

 Tips for Shift Workers

  • Keep sleep times as consistent as possible.

  • Use blackout curtains or an eye mask after night shifts.

  • Limit caffeine towards the end of your shift.

  • Expose yourself to daylight after waking.

  • Plan recovery time between rotating shifts.
